Lady Rangers Softball win HOY Championship for the 2nd Year!

The Lady Rangers softball team travelled to Washington, DC April 19-22 to participate in the XVII Annual HOY Tournament hosted by Model Secondary School for the Deaf. All games were played on Gallaudet’s turf softball field. Huge thank you to Lady Bison’s for allowing us to use their state-of-the-art softball field!

The Lady Rangers faced California School for the Deaf – Fremont in the first round of pool play. Emma Giuntoli hit two homeruns with one being a grand slam homerun. Emma Giuntoli pitched a no hitter with 5 strikeouts. The game ended after 2½ innings by 15 after 3 run rule with a final score of TSD 19 CSDF 0.

The second round of pool play, Lady Rangers played the host school, Model Secondary School for the Deaf. The first two innings the Rangers and the Eagles kept the score close with MSSD leading after the second inning 3-2. In the third inning, the Lady Rangers went on a hitting spree and scored 10 runs. The Lady Rangers had 11 hits in the game and only allowed MSSD one hit. The final score after the 3½ innings by time limit, TSD 12 MSSD 3.

After pool play was completed, the weather in Washington, DC was not looking good for Friday’s bracket play. The athletic directors met and decided to format the softball games the same as baseball. That put Texas vs Indiana in the Championship game, Fremont vs Model playing for 3rd/4th place, and Maryland vs Riverside competing for 5th/6th place.

The Lady Rangers jumped to an early lead in the 1st inning, 1-0 and never looked back. Lady Rangers held Indiana to only allowing 2 hits while TSD had 13 hits and no errors. Sarah Helm hit the winning runs in the 6th inning. Lady Rangers won the Championship by the 10 after 5 run rule outscoring Indiana 13-2.

Coach Munoz, Coach McKeller and Coach Oshman look forward to the XVIII HOY Tournament in Riverside, California on April 20-21, 2018!!
